I am looking to find a the best way to "copy" VHD's / VM's to an external hard drives, in order to take them of site as a last resort DR backup.
I know there are many ways to take back-ups, but this is the method I have been tasked with finding a solution for.
We have a HyperV host and a HyperV replica Servers. Both Servers are running HyperV core so there is no GUI.
In simple terms ideally I am looking for a batch file / script or app that can do this.
1: Stop or pause a VM
2: Copy it to USB
3: Restart the VM
Pretty straight forward? But it raisies a few initial thoughts...
- Stopping the main running VM's would be disruptive, so I am thinking that the method should run on the replica server?
- Is it enough just to copy the VHD's and any checkpoint files etc?
- Would it be better to do an acutal "export" rather than a copy?
- Is it safe to export a running VM?
Any thought on this appreicated.
