We are building a new print server and are moving to Windows 2016 or 2019 core most probably.

I see it all over the web, including Microsoft, so there must be some legitimate benefits to moving the Spooler file to a separate drive.  All the articles say how, but I have yet come across one that gives any idea of how big to make it.

Currently we have 450 printers, Multi-Function copiers and plotters running Windows 10 so client-side rendering.  Coming up with a average size for the documents appears difficult as we print in the .pdf format often and maps through the plotters.

Is there a way to track how many resources spooling is currently taking?  Currently memory and CPU used is about one half of available.  4GB-1CPU-18GB free of a 55GB drive

We are using VMware so I guess we could increase the size as needed but I was looking for something to start with that would give me a fighting chance.

Any help is appreciated.

Hi,

the reasoning behind moving the spooler folder to a different drive is twofold:

  • performance. The benefit will only be realised if you moved to different spindles (like with SQL logs, Exchange logs etc.) so since you are using virtualisation, it's probably not going to buy you anything, the additional disk coming from the same physical hardware as the system one
  • preventing the spooler from flooding the system drive. Make no mistake here, the spooler can still flood its own drive and stop working but at least the OS underneath it remains operational.
Your current disk space consumption is the best indicator. If you have 30 GB free without any jobs being printed and never had any problem with disk space, then obviously this is enough. Plan for some contingency like job files not getting deleted, double the disk size, monitor closely and you're good.

Thank you for the thoughts.  I was curious if keeping the spooler on the same drive as the OS, say d:\, would help or hold us back.  I sounds like moving the spooler wouldn't help unless we move it to a faster location.
