OK, tis all bonkers with Covid, but too long.

Video call with any and all Thursday 21/5/2020 between 20.30 Irish Time or 14.30 Mark time (Central Time)

Thursday 21/5/2020 we will have a live session.
Currently options are

1. Zoom - Mark needs to get a device he untrusts
2. Skype - Mark has this, how may live does it allow into a call?
3. Google Meet - Possible.
4. Teams - No. Limit of 4 feeds

All other options considered

Joe-

Sounds like a capital idea.  I'm not sure about the timing thing for this week. I have used Zoom and having risk evaluated it in the last year for work, found there were some shortcomings in the security area, but they have been working to address them.  The likely shortcoming of it is not the number of participants, but duration.  For the free version they limit you to 45 minutes a session, although we could get around that by re-joining a new session.  I've seen it support up to 200 participants, but figure we won't get close to that.

I've heard good things about  Google meet and I have used Team Meetings, which M$ seems to be force feeding to us through stealth Office upgrades where it automagically "appears" after you re-boot from a system update.

The only other remote client I have used recently since pandemic times is Cisco webex, but I find it kludgy compared with other meeting apps these days, but it is likely rubust enough to handle the number of participants you have with the free version (up to 50).

M$ Skype keeps changing the damn interface, so I haven't used it in the last few years but I think it may die of neglect if Teams takes off.

One other thought: perhaps do a trial run with a few people on each end of the transatlantic pipe to see how it goes or to iron out the kinks. If that goes well, then send out an invite to everyone via a forum post.  This is what I've done with local professional organizational meetings where there are more than 10 people that have gone from physical to virtual.

We have access to an on-prem Zoom gateway, which is the edge for the conference call courtesy of a member.
So it would be a longer call than the free 40 min call.

Google Meet is an option.
Teams is limited.

More details to follow.

We're good.
Used them all in anger across multiple time zones.

Joe, sounds like a great idea. But is Mark in the Central or Eastern time zone?

if I’m not in a work meeting, I’ll definitely try joining. Would be good to see how everyone is doing.

Just checked. I didn’t know Florida had 2 time zones. Learn something new every day.

It's probably because of the space center, to confuse the Soviets ;-)

I’m getting messages that it’s 2:30 Eastern time not Central time. So hope people aren’t getting confused about the time for the call.

I couldn't resist popping in here to see how everyone was doing.  Glad to see something is getting set up!  Not sure if I can make the call or not, but I'll put 2:30 central on my calendar and if someone messages me the info before then I will try to make it.  Note I've never made it to any of the conferences in person, so no one would need to feel the need to pretend to know me.  :-)

Regarding the conferencing stuff, just my two cents, wanted or not
The word I hear about zoom is that the client versions released since April are more secure than previous versions, and that utilizing a password for the invite is the best way to keep unwanted party crashers out
Anything Skype used to do, Teams can do better
Google Meet I haven't tried but my elderly father has figured out how to use Google Hangouts, so it's got to be pretty easy, right?  :-)

Anne,

1. it's 2:30 east from my understanding of your crazy outlandish time zones
2. it would help if you enabled PM [wink] Otherwise, you depend on those knowing your email address.
