So we are seeing this issue with one of our servers:
https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/532911-cnf-guid-objects-in-active-directory

http://windowsitpro.com/windows/i-have-objects-my-active-directory-ad-domain-have-cnf-their-name-followed-globally-unique-id

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/15435.active-directory-duplicate-object-name-resolution.aspx

It's our main DFS server that hosts most of our shares. In AD it's name is ServerNameCNF:[guid]. I have searched high and low in AD and I cannot find it's "copy" or duplicate. I was hoping to rename the computer object in AD, but it seems like it's not possible. All the articles I read on the subject say basically "just remove and rejoin the machine to the domain and delete one of the copies from AD.

But in these cases they are talking about a desktop machines. Not the primary DFS server holding 95% of the shares.

So the question is, should I or could I rename the server to FileServer1 then reboot it, then rename it back to FileServer (the old name) just to get the name corrected in AD? OR will that process hose my DFS Shares?

How would you guys approach this? I'm no expert in DFS for sure, I just know that it can be very sensitive, and if I break it - it will be one of those situations where I'll be awake for however long it takes to fix it.

What I would love to do is just correct the spelling in AD and not have to mess with the server. If you look at the computer name on the server it's correct.

Anthony,

a. are you using a domain-based namespace or a standalone namespace?

b. what exactly is the misnamed server hosting? the namespace, actual file shares, or both?

If it works, just leave it. For computer objects it is possible that the CNF object is the live object. There is no proven method to fix it, and seeing the impact of this machine I'd leave it alone. Maybe update the Description field to explain what is going on.

It's a domain based DFS, and it hosts the namespace as well as the files.
