We have a number of sites where Patch Tuesday is just killing.

We had implemented the GPO to throttle bits traffic and currently have it set to 20kbit per machine.  It does not appear that the machines are respecting this gpo at all.  We get a 20mbit connection at a 30 user site totally saturated... and a 100mbit connection at a 300 user site saturated.

Does this GPO not work for windows 8.1 and windows 10?

Apparently, you are not the only person to complain about that.

Hmm I don't think this is related.  Our win10 machines are a small fraction - maybe 10 or so out of 250 at this particular site.  The problem is that windows (8.1 primarily) appears to be completely ignoring the GPO setting specified for BITS bandwidth limitation.

You asked about Win 10 in your original post.  Why doesn't it matter now?   Are you only interested in a GPO solution?
3rd party solutions exist as well.

Sorry, I probably wasn't clear.  I am asking specifically about this GPO and why clients (mainly 8.1, but also presumably our win10 ones) are ignoring it.

Definitely interested in hearing about success with 3rd party options.  Are you referring to some kind of agent that runs on the workstations to throttle this traffic, or something different?

Thanks!

That could be the answer to the 8.1 question.

I never used the tool in the link below so don't consider it a recommendation.

Thanks for the link, very interesting!  Although nothing WU is sending is 4GB in size... but I wonder if there isn't something generally wrong with 8.1's parsing of that gpo...

The search query that I used was similar to Windows 8.1 ignores GPO.  As I was typing that, google's auto complete suggested about 5 different things that Windows 8.1 ignores as if it were a run away train. I just tried Window 8.1 has a mind of it's own & even that gave me some results.
