Hi guys,

Working on a DR situation. The network used to have 3 2008 R2 DC's.
These got damaged and the only copy of a DC available to rebuild the Domain
from is a 6 month old copy VHD of the main FSMO DC.

We have to rebuild the Domain from this DC, but as it is 6 months old
what is the best approach to bring it back up to date cleanly so we can rebuild
the Domain from it? Is there a best practice guide for this situation taking
in to account tombstoneing and bringing it up to date time wise etc?

Cheers

PT

Hi,

as long as there are no other active DCs, no objects will get tombstoned, why should they? You will have to rejoin your computers (or at least reset their passwords) anyway because their machine passwords have been changed since backup. But if it is your only copy, there won't be any replication-related artefacts such as tombstones, lingering objects etc.

Google "authoritative restore", that's probably what you will have to do before introducing a 2nd DC into the restored forest.
