The "Remote Desktop Gateway" service is configured to start with "delayed start". That's the default value.
Why is that ? Can I just cange it to "automatic", not delayed ?

Just a guess: Does it have to wait for an IP address to be assigned after the machine boots?

Hi,

i wouldn't let it start too soon. Two reasons that come to mind:

1. performance. You wouldn't want your RDP session tunneled through a machine that is busy initialising other stuff
2. firewall. Firewall is essential to RDG functionality so you'd want the Firewall GPO applied before it starts

I'm not sure about the exact reason, but I would leave it in place. if I speak to some RDS MVP's I will ask them because it's actually interesting. There is a lot going on while booting which the RDGW relies on, not just the network but all the dependend services like the
NLA (which sets the firewall profile), NPA and IIS.

We actually had the same on the Citrix counterpart, Citrix Secure Gateway, which is nothing more than a customized apache reverse proxy. The virtualized box started so fast (just a sec or 3) that CSG would fail, so we needed to set it to delayed start.

But offcourse you can test if you need the faster startup, I would recommend to start it at least 10 times and perhaps under some load to see if everything starts correctly. But If you don't need it, i would let it be the default.

Also isn't there the Windows Internal Database that has to start as well? Without that nobody is connecting anyway.

Thanks for letting me know.
In the mean time I'll leave it at the default value.
