So... I've resurrected the 26 October 2014 (pre-attack) member list.  Once cleaned -- removing deleted users and those who registered but never activated their accounts -- there are 10,092 names.  My intention is to do one big one-time-only email to them, saying we're back, please consider re-joining us.

But my question is, is that really nice?  Ethical?  Or am I being a dick if I do?

There is a field with time/date of last logon (btw, WobbleWobble was the last logon before the forum blew up, so we're watching you, McGlynn! [smile] ) and so I was able to do a frequency distribution answering the question, "how many users last logged on on year X?"  Here are the results:

2014189
2013454
2012587
2011833
20101023
20091189
20081506
20071499
2006900
2005709
2004978
2003326

Thus, only 189 users' last logon year was 2014, 454 on 2013, etc.  Understand that this is NOT a census for that year -- in 2007 many more people logged in than 1499 -- it's just saying, "in year X, Y people essentially left us by having a last logon in that year."

I don't think 10,000 emails is an obnoxious burden on the Internet, and anyone who gets my newsletter knows that my emails are text and brief with unsubscribe links on them.  But would it be silly to email someone whose last logon was in 2003 and say, "hey, want to join our new forum?"

Love to hear your thoughts.

Mark

I think there is no problem mailing interested people. Can you do this?

- logged on in 2013 or 2014
- posted at least once.
- active account at time of crash; remember we put a lot of effort into disabling spammers.

And of course, all the newsletter subscribers... I guess? The newsletter is dead, isn't it?

Nope, newsletter has just been on sabbatical.  Coming back soon. [smile]

By "active," you mean enabled?  that's the 10,000 number.

Thanks for the thoughts!

I would expect that a lot of the "active" people on the forum, would be subscribers to the newsletter as well.

My opinion is this....

The mail should clearly state that this is a one time only unsolicited email, due to the fact that the forum blew up.    People generally aren't going to mind then.

But before sending, I would make sure you aren't listed on some spam RBL somewhere....

Nick

Yep. I'm just saying that you're not being unethical [smile]

Did you just try turning it off and blaming me?

How ironic.

I for one was very happy to get the email, THANK YOU for deciding to send it! I don't think I was remotely active on any previous forum (you'd probably have to go down the list around the 10,000 point), but I've been lurking somewhere in your fan base for decades. Your PowerShell webinar ("Learn-PowerShell Before You Have to Exit-Industry" or something like that) introduced me to PowerShell, and now I use it at least every week, daily some weeks.

Thanks for the email!  I would randomly click on an old favorite for the forum anytime I was a little bored, and always sad to see the same message up there.

I was happy and surprised to get the email. Did not know the forum blew up but I'm glad it's back.  I like knowing that there's somewhere to go for help when I need it.
