How WAS the storm, Joe?  We talking 50 MPH with 70 MPH gusts, or just sustained 30 with gusts to 50?

70MPH - we laugh at that and still walk to the pub!

We get bad weather and wind, we're an island on the edge of the Atlantic. You go to Florida for the sun, you come to Ireland for the greenery.

Overall for the East Coast it was just a bit of a bad storm, some wind and rain.
But for some of the country it was worse, over 300,000 lost power, water, internet (Oh shock for the teenagers) and communications.
We even had electricity line crews in Ireland from other countries!

During the storm Fastnet lighthouse recorded 190KPH wind gusts or 118.061 for you non metric people.
But its off the coast and an isolated lighthouse - Fastnet

Friends in Galway were not great and friends in Cork were without power for 5 days and lost all their trees.
Even with all the warnings, three people died and that's the big pity.

Lot of conversation about two things.
1. The apparent over reaction. I don't believe it was, better to have people indoors during what could have been terrible. Three people died, last big storm 11 died, so I call that a better result but still a sad failing.
2. The lunatics who went kite surfing off the East Coast and the pure loon who went swimming in Galway. Rescue services were sent out after them - I believe they should have been left and seen if they were nominated for Darwin Awards.

We have another storm yesterday/today (Friday & Saturday, Brian apparently (Am I supposed to feel better now I know their name?)) and more debate about the parks closing etc.
Again I feel its a better idea to close them and have the emergency services for the emergencies not the unnecessary mishaps.

Wow!  You see how wonderful global warming is... we Floridians can now share one of our most distinctive local pleasures... a hurricane.  [smile]

Thanks Folks for remembering me but I have to remind friends often that I don't celebrate my birthday.

In fact, I forgot about it.

Funny story.   In doctor's offices they often give you a form to fill out.

Fields like SSN and Birth date are prominent.

I often put in the wrong date on purpose.    I show them my insurance card, so they know I have insurance.   But often the administrator comes into the examination room and says "You don't have insurance!!!!!"

I laugh with a strong sense of derision and tell them "Why would I put my real date of birth down on a piece of paper? That is so 1987!!!"

Regarding the Storms Joe, that was some wind you had there.

This year really demonstrated the power of the thermodynamics of the weather.

What a mess in Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico, and the outer Islands.

We finally heard from relatives on the island.  It was only for a few seconds.  A short text that they were alive.
Then no signal until a week later, and then longer text.

Still no power in much of the island.     It shows that you can't depend on the "System".
