Hello. I want to know if its possible for the company users to be able to connect the company usb device (Either HDD or Stick) and block other user device (HDD or Stick) from running on the laptop. An app maybe or policy? Thanks Just to add that in my case some domain users are set as local administrators also.

There maybe a way to filter it by MAC addresses & group policy.

Yes, you can do that with 3rd party tools like DriveLock or the like. Enterprise versions of most antivirus products (McAfee, Symantec and Kaspersky are those I have seen in action) have a Data Leak Prevention component which also allows blocking any devices while allowing particular drives.

Thanks for the info. I have found a link from microsoft about : Preventing Installation of all Devices by default and allow installation of a device by harware ID. Link : ttps://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc753119(WS.10).aspx In my case though the clients laptops are not joined into domain (Sorry forgot to mention that) and they have full administrative rights on their laptops. I guess i could apply this policy localy on their system hoping they will not find a way to modify it or the company can purchase a third party app that does this job.

When I was contracting for a small mortgage company, I felt that I had to have at least a little faith in the users not to be too stupid. When the Trend Micro dashboard told me that it had cleaned a virus on one of the workstations, I went to the user & asked her if she was opening her personal emails on the company's PC. She said yes & I asked her to wait until she went home to check her emails. She agreed. I could have asked her what email she used & blocked it at the router. I don't know how well you know your users or if they will agree, if you ask them not to use outside USB drives. If you still want to block the drives, I still think that the MAC address idea might work.

Don, how are MAC addresses related to USB drives?

Don. I will be honest. I do not have a lot of faith to the users to be honest . My opinion of course. I could give many examples but that is another story. Thank you everyone for your suggestions.

That's okay. You have to go with your gut feeling.
