So a few questions...

My son saved up and bought a games console so he could play FIFA 2016 and other games.
The console, TV, DVD etc gets tuned off completely at night from a socket switch and turned on as needed.
He has had the console for 6 or 7 months and loves to play weekend mornings before the house wakes up.
It regularly updates and can take 30 minutes to do this work and it frustrates him and he turns it off as the messages are not really informative for an 8 year old.

What is the games console doing looking for so frequent updates?
What benefit is there in a games console getting updated so frequently?
Why?

I should add its an XBox One and its driving us mad with its updates.
Seriously looking at resurrecting the PlayStation (One) as it never updates and just lets you play a game and does not cause massive frustration as your sibling has logged out, being forgotten in the update, god damn POS just wiped its user list and we all have to log in again (what is the 1TB HD all about, can't you just save the config there!!!)
Does PS4 suffer the same amount of updates/ frustrations.

I have had every generation of XBOX.
It is certainly the preferred platform for my family of 7.
Young and old.

Updates are frequent, required, and large these days.
It is not uncommon for an app or game to require and update before the next use.
(it will not work until updated)
It is not uncommon for a brand new game to have a multiple gigabyte update, required, before you can play it, the day you bought it, maybe even the day it released!

You are probably experiencing this pain a little 'more' because of your choice to turn the box off.  If you left it powered on (suspended) it would power on and update itself, and then power off (theoretically).  My experience here varies.

If I (or one of my family) am planning on a 'session' whether HBOGO or HALO 5 for example, the first thing I do is power on, check for updates, well before I plan to actually engage in my (or thier) session.  Otherwise delays are certain.  I actually do this preemptively to save my family from (some of) the frustration.

We used to have all of our XBOXs wireless, but because of the size and frequency of updates, we have wired 2 out of 3 of them at this time.

I hope this helps with the why, but it won't remove the pain.
I think this is just the price we pay today, and once you understand it, you can manage it.
I doubt PS4 is any different, but I don't spend time in that camp, so I truly don't know.

I like my xbox one. The one issue that i have is about regions. It expects you to speak Dutch when you state you are in the Netherlands. Now I've stated that i am in the US for the Xbox but i can't use any Dutch credit card or paypall. My gf is a native English speaker and not planning to learn Dutch any time soon. I feel like I have to cheat to get around a silly language constriction.

Question about the Browser or more exact streaming poscast.  For some reason it will hang at almost the halfway point of each podcast (about the 1 hour mark). I will hit the play button and will it continue for about 5 mins, then all controls fails and the Edge crashes...  Once I re-open the podcast and move the slider to the approximate time (we have learned to check that before it crashes) it will 75% of the time finish the last hour.

We have had multiple changes with Verizon FIOS having a major outage (has not been the same since) being sold to Frontier Cable (have had other issues daily since) AND an large XBOX update when it all started.

If I use Google Chrome from my laptop to the TV it works fine...

I have tried Mobile & Desktop mode, Desktop will not even find the video to play...

Other than that the only issues I have had are with Ubisoft and their servers crashing while playing The Division with Loki...   But that is not XBOX's fault...

RANT ALERT!!!   RANT ALERT!!!   RANT ALERT!!!   RANT ALERT!!!

Now, if you want to talk about frustration, try buying a game (Star Wars Battlefront) NO lets make that TWO games so that we can play on-line together at the same time without the split window making it over $120 only to have Loki not able to play because he is not 18...

Regardless of what you set the XBOX Account Settings too, it will not allow him to play...  The gaming company is pulling the info from your Microsoft Outlook Account NOT from the XBOX settings.  So,,, if you actually put your kids real birthday into Outlook when you created their account - needed for XBOX Gold - which "why not?" you want to lock down the account and make it safe for them on the internet right..?   Well F*** YOU!!!   No Refund your SOL!!

So after a day of trying not to cyber punch a Microsoft Tech in the face we finally got it resolved...

  • We canceled his XBOX Gold Account for the original Outlook account
  • Created a NEW Outlook Account and made him 21 years old
  • Purchased a NEW XBOX Gold Account for the NEW Outlook account
  • Set the OLD account as the Home Account on his XBOX (XBOX this is the home xbox etc etc using the Old Account)
  • Added his NEW Outlook Account

Now using his NEW Outlook Account we can play Star Wars online together...   The Old Account MUST remain on the XBOX or the games will no longer work unless we re-purchase them with his New Outlook Account.

After getting a lecture about letting my son play a game rated Teen and trying my best not to swear,,, I suggested that IF they are going to let gaming companies tie directly into my Outlook Account to decide IF I can play a game that I have purchased, then perhaps they do not let me buy the F********* Game In The First Place!!!!    IF you are not allowed to play it, then tell me during purchase "Hey You cannot play this so we are not going to charge your account"

OH!!  What about your kids that are 18 on possible on the way to school.  All those game you bought with your XBOX Account & CC that they have been playing.  They get to take them with their NEW system right  NOPE!!!  The games purchased with your account stays on your XBOX, period...  No way to transfer...

Recommendation, avoid the rabbit hole of using a console to play games you can get in a PC?

Xbox controllers work well on a Windows 10 machine if you need to have 2 joysticks and 4 buttons in a triangle layout. My preference is to use keyboard and mouse while playing.

Consoles are like owning a speed boat, but after you use them and the games you get on them, they just sit around doing nothing for enjoyment.

Dale,

We switch off just about every electrical device at night/ when we've finished. We don't need them when we've finished.
About the only thing that doesn't get turned off is the Cable modem, as I may/ have been seen to work quite late.
So no, leaving the device on, just to download instead of asking do I want the latest piece of MS designed goop.

Ton and Tim - try being Irish with the settings, apparently we ain't here sometimes.
And yes, felt your pain with the XBox account.

Chris, he bought it himself, saved up and was very proud and so he should be (he's almost 8).
We have a PC for the kids, buts its nothing special, for that very reason, video play real bad on it, no video camera etc

Maybe we should get a petition to have the XBox Devs use dial up for the updates. See how quick they'd get their code into order then!
