When replacing a server that has an active AAD Connect to O365 (non-federated), once AAD Connect is installed on the replacement server and set to match the existing credentials, will it simply pick up where the retired machine left off?  I have read several articles that sort of state that but want to make sure.

I don't think so Jon, not in general. You configuration could be so close to default that you could get away with it, but let's not assume. This is a good view on the matter: https://practical365.com/identity/migrating-azure-ad-connect-new-server/

There seem to be so many different opinions to this but none have really demonstrated their theories.  Started reading your reference but life has gotten in the way.  It appears though that the author has gone well beyond simply giving a what for on the subject.  The article answers some of the other things I had not thought of yet and appreciate the input.
